Hello, everybody!

Kaeloo the frog is the series' protagonist, who the show is named after. She is the guardian of Smileyland, and is usually the one to suggest the games the characters play. When Kaeloo is angered, she transforms into a hulking toad called Bad Kaeloo.

Appearance[]

Kaeloo is a small frog. She has a green body and her belly and the lower half of her face are yellow. She has red eyes, two red spirals on her cheeks and bright white teeth. It is often implied that Kaeloo may be slightly overweight.

Bad Kaeloo is a large, muscular toad with visible veins and yellow spots on his body. The red spirals on Kaeloo's cheeks are not present on Bad Kaeloo's cheeks. He has very poor oral hygiene. His tongue is blue and his teeth are not properly aligned. His right eye has a yellow scar running through it.

In "Si on jouait au mécano quantique", Kaeloo briefly appears in the form of a human. Her human form is Caucasian. She has green shoulder-length hair with bangs in the front and red eyes with thick eyelashes. She wears a yellow tee-shirt, denim overall shorts, and brown boots.

Personality[]

Kaeloo is a sweet and imaginative but dangerously emotionally unstable little frog who's always looking for games to play with her "buddies". She is very kind, gentle and forgiving, and she still sees Mr. Cat as a friend and tries her best to make him feel happy and welcome despite his cruel and sadistic nature. She is also usually the one to stand up for Quack-Quack when Mr. Cat is tormenting him, and she is fiercely protective of the flowers of Smileyland. Kaeloo loves all things "cute" or "beautiful". She also enjoys things that most people would describe as "mushy", such as handwritten love letters, fairy tales, and soap operas. Kaeloo is a well-organized person who respects tradition, and freaks out when things are disorganized or when rules are broken. Kaeloo is extremely naïve and childlike; examples of this include her thinking her missing keys are "playing hide-and-seek", and her interpreting one of Mr. Cat's sexual-innuendo-laden pick-up lines in a literal manner and misunderstanding him.

Kaeloo has also shown a less pleasant side of her personality, like in "Let's Play Courtroom Drama" when she emotionally manipulates Mr. Cat, or in "Si on jouait à la malédiction du pharaon" where she pretends not to notice that Stumpy is drowning in quicksand. Despite usually being vehemently opposed to cheating, Kaeloo will occasionally cheat to win, as shown in "Let's Play Golf!" and "Si on jouait au baseball". Although Kaeloo is forgiving, when pushed past a certain point, she will not hesitate to get revenge on the person who made her angry, like in "Si on jouait aux top models" when she enlists Mr. Cat's help to get revenge on Pretty for body-shaming her. Also, due to the fact that she is the one who comes up with most of the games, she believes that she is entitled to be bossy while playing and gets angry whenever someone questions the rules. Kaeloo occasionally acts selfish as well; in "Si on jouait à cupidon.com", Mr. Cat stops hurting Quack-Quack to annoy her and while Quack-Quack is happy about the change, Kaeloo wishes that Mr. Cat would beat him up just so she could get attention from Mr. Cat. This suggests that her protective nature to Quack-Quack is, at least in part, a façade to make herself look good. In "Si on jouait à... cours, rumeur ! Cours !", "Si on jouait avec Poucave, and "Si on jouait à l'interrogation she is also shown to enjoy gossip, and the plot of "Si on jouait à... cours, rumeur ! Cours !" centers around Kaeloo spreading rumors.

Despite this, Kaeloo remains a largely non-confrontational person and tends to address many conflicts in a subtle manner. In "Si on jouait aux top models", instead of directly confronting Stumpy about being too noisy, she tells Quack-Quack in a loud voice that she appreciates how quiet he is in comparison to Stumpy, and in instances where she sees someone else flirting with Mr. Cat, her crush, she finds an excuse to remove them from the scene instead of directly expressing that she wants them to leave.

It has often been hinted at that Kaeloo has terribly low self-esteem. The most prominent example of this is "Si on jouait à cupidon.com". Pretty tries to use a love potion on Mr. Cat but ends up making him fall in love with a soda can, leading him to ignore everyone around him; when Kaeloo realizes that this also means he won't abuse Quack-Quack and therefore she doesn't have to protect Quack-Quack anymore, she cries because she feels "useless". In "Si on jouait toute seule", Kaeloo falls into a depressive state because her friends are gone for the day and hadn't informed her in advance; Mr. Cat, who is out partying with some other friends, is talking about Kaeloo to said friends at the same time she's worrying about being abandoned, proving that her fears are unfounded. "Si on jouait au beach volley" and "Si on jouait à la forêt à fessées" also suggest that she has body image issues.

Kaeloo is often quite possessive of her friends. In "Si on jouait au train du dodo" and "Si on jouait aux amis imaginaires", she is upset by the idea of her friends having friends other than her. The latter is a particularly egregious case as the friends in question were imaginary friends. This possessiveness especially applies to Mr. Cat, as she dislikes seeing him with other girls.

In the earlier seasons of the show, Bad Kaeloo is violent and sadistic and enjoys mindless violence. However, upon detransforming, Kaeloo would always apologize for her actions while transformed. Nevertheless, Bad Kaeloo also shown to genuinely care about the buddies. This includes Mr. Cat, who Bad Kaeloo has been seen laughing with, protecting, and even kissing. In later seasons, Bad Kaeloo gains an appreciation for being nice, and often tries to be polite and helpful.

Abilities[]

Kaeloo has the power to transform into Bad Kaeloo, a muscular toad. Whether or not Kaeloo can voluntarily transform without being angered depends on the episode. Bad Kaeloo has impressive athletic abilities, such as stopping a car with his bare hands, throwing Mr. Cat into the air at a speed of 88mph, and holding off a meteor. In Season 5, Kaeloo gains the ability to control her transformations much better by communicating with Bad Kaeloo.

Starting from the show's third season, Kaeloo has been able to transform partially, or to transform a specific body part while the others remain intact.

Kaeloo has a lisp, which can cause misunderstandings between her and the other characters, especially in the French dub since she pronounces words in such a way that they sound like different words altogether. In early episodes, the other characters, especially Mr. Cat, used to make fun of her for it. However, Bad Kaeloo does not have a lisp.

Kaeloo is a master of martial arts, even in her "normal" form. She can also use her tongue to snatch things when necessary.

Kaeloo's intelligence varies between episodes, from being somewhat smart to being a complete idiot.

Role in the show[]

Kaeloo is the protagonist of the show. She is normally the one to suggest playing the games the buddies play. She is the guardian of Smileyland. Most episodes revolve around Kaeloo's superpower of being able to transform into Bad Kaeloo. Whenever something goes wrong in Smileyland, Kaeloo attempts to fix it, often with help from her friends.

Gender[]

Kaeloo's gender has always been unclear for fans of the show. In the original dub, both Kaeloo and Bad Kaeloo use she/her and he/him, and both masculine and feminine adjectives. However, Kaeloo tends to prefer she/her while Bad Kaeloo prefers he/him.

The Italian dub and the Hindi dub labeled her as male. There was also a mistake with the dubbing in the English dub when Kaeloo was referred to with he/him for the first ten episodes in scenes where she used she/her in the French dub. This was soon changed however, with everyone referring to her with she/her pronouns. Kaeloo is confirmed to be a girl in the English dub, unlike the French dub. The show's official Facebook page has confirmed that being a frog, she is able to change sexes.[1]

Relationships[]

Kaeloo tries her best to maintain a decent relationship with everyone in Smileyland, no matter how antagonistic they may be towards her. She is particularly close with Stumpy, Quack-Quack, and Mr. Cat, the latter of whom she has a crush on and is the closest with. Kaeloo is very possessive of her friends and dislikes it when they talk about their other friends to her, even if the friends in question happen to be imaginary friends. Kaeloo often irritates the other characters and causes conflict, usually without meaning to. This has led to certain episodes being centered around Kaeloo losing all her friends, with the exception of Mr. Cat, and the latter helping her patch things up with the others.
